Rev. Jamaal Nelson, Democratic District Leader

A Community Organizer, ordained Baptist Minister, and Democratic District Leader Rev. Jamaal Nelson is deeply committed to the principle of grassroots mobilization and empowerment. A tireless advocate for education reform, Rev. Nelson’s commitment to educational equity is deeply rooted in his own personal background.

 

Despite being severely dyslexic and left back in the third grade Rev. Nelson was able to go on to earn a B.S. from Vanderbilt University and a M. Div. from Harvard University. Now Rev. Nelson is working to ensure that every child has access to a truly extraordinary public education. He is known to say that, “Education is the great emancipator, education emancipates from generational poverty, brokenness, and hopelessness.”

 

Rev. Nelson and his lovely wife are raising their three beautiful daughters in Harlem. Rev. Nelson is fighting to make his community a better place for his daughters. He has a proven track record of:

 

  •  Fighting to increase affordable housings

  •  Fighting to strengthen Medicare

  •  Fighting for comprehensive immigration reform

  •  Fighting to stop baseless penalties imposed on small business

  •  Fighting to support Manhattan’s entrepreneurs, inventors, and  innovators
